Recently, a woman challenged her father, who is also the owner of Caterbest Restaurant in Ipoh, to prepare a dish using durian, a fruit loved by many but often considered tricky to cook with.
In a video shared by TikTok user Jenjenjeng, she presented her father with a mystery box containing pieces of paper, each listing a possible main ingredient for the challenge. When her father picked one, it revealed that the key ingredient would be durian.
Without hesitation, they headed to a nearby stall to choose the best durian for the special dish he was about to create.
After purchasing the durian, they returned straight to the restaurant's kitchen to begin. Jen's father was seen skillfully opening the durian, removing its creamy flesh, and separating the seeds. He then mashed the flesh until smooth, preparing it for cooking.
Revealing his plan, he announced that prawns would be the main protein for the dish and began heating up the wok.
First, he melted butter in the wok and added the freshly made durian cream, mixing until well combined. Next, he tossed in pre-fried prawns, coating them in the rich durian mixture before adding evaporated milk for extra creaminess.
For presentation, he plated the dish inside the hollowed durian shell, adding a hibiscus flower as decoration, a nod to Malaysia's Independence Month.
The pair then enjoyed the unique creation together, with Jen praising the taste and asking in the caption, "This is the first time making prawn durian, should we sell this menu?"
Jen is no stranger to sharing food-related content, often posting about restaurants she visits or cooking challenges she takes on with her father. According to her, Caterbest Restaurant has been run by her parents since 1994 and is halal-certified.
The video quickly caught the attention of viewers, with many expressing curiosity about the unusual dish and even planning to visit the restaurant to try it for themselves.
It seems that prawn durian might just become Caterbest's next viral menu item.
