A local mathematics teacher has made the nation proud after being selected as one of the top 18 teachers in the world. Lee Chye Mei, who teaches at Sekolah Menengah Teknik (SMT) Tuanku Jaafar, has earned a coveted spot in the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program Spring 2025 in the United States.

Lee is the only Malaysian to be chosen for the prestigious program after undergoing a highly competitive selection process involving thousands of applicants worldwide. She will be attending Georgia State University, where she will take part in a professional development course designed to enhance teaching skills and promote cultural exchange.

Reflecting on her journey, Lee described the experience as transformative.

"This experience truly opened my eyes. I learned how students can become more active, critical, and confident when the teacher acts as a facilitator, not just a transmitter of knowledge," she shared.

Championing Malaysian Culture Abroad

Beyond academics, Lee embraced the opportunity to share Malaysia's rich cultural heritage with her peers and the school community abroad. She believes that representing her country goes beyond showcasing food and traditional attire.

"Talking about Malaysia gave me an indescribable sense of pride. Its not just about food or clothing, but also our values, hopes, and the spirit of our people," she said.

Lee also highlighted how the student-centered learning approach and creative use of technology in classrooms abroad created a more engaging and dynamic learning environment, an approach she hopes to bring back and implement locally.

Gratitude and a Bigger Mission

Lee expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) for making her participation in the program possible.

"Without their encouragement, I might not be here. They saw a small potential that could create a big impact," she said.

To Lee, the role of an educator extends far beyond textbooks and exams. She believes teachers are instrumental in shaping the confidence and aspirations of young minds.

"Every time a student asks a question with confidence, it's a sign that change is beginning," she noted.

Lee's selection not only marks a personal milestone but also serves as an inspiration to educators across Malaysia, reminding them of the powerful influence they hold in nurturing the next generation.
