Everyday Things You Do That You Didn't Know Had Names

Many of the little things we do every day have surprisingly specific names. From stretching after waking up to accidentally finishing an entire bag of chips, there's often a real word that describes these familiar experiences.

Here are some everyday behaviours you may not have known had names.

Pandiculation

Stretching and yawning at the same time, usually after waking up or after sitting still for a long period.

It is your body's natural way of helping muscles wake up and improving circulation before you start moving.

Example:

"Every morning, I can't stop pandiculating before getting out of bed."

Ultracrepidarianism

Giving strong opinions about topics you know little or nothing about.

The term has become especially relevant in the age of social media, where people often comment confidently on subjects outside their expertise.

Example:

"She started talking about medicine after reading one article. That's pure ultracrepidarianism."

Manspreading

Sitting with your legs spread so wide that you take up more than your fair share of space, particularly on public transport.

The term is commonly used when someone's posture inconveniences others nearby.

Example:

"There wasn't enough room on the train because someone was manspreading across two seats."

Vamping

Staying up late using your phone, tablet or other electronic devices instead of going to sleep.

Whether you're scrolling social media, watching videos or replying to messages, many people have experienced vamping without realising there's a name for it.

Example:

"I was vamping on TikTok until 2 a.m. and regretted it the next morning."

Interrobang

The punctuation mark or combination "?! " used to express both surprise and a question at the same time.

Although many people type "?!", the official name for this expressive punctuation is an interrobang.

Example:

"When she said she quit her job, my reply was basically an interrobang: 'You did what?!'"

Snaccident

A playful term for accidentally eating an entire packet of snacks when you only intended to have a little.

While it's not an official dictionary word in every dictionary, it's widely used online.

Example:

"I only wanted a few chips, but it turned into a complete snaccident."

Pareidolia

The tendency to see familiar faces, animals or objects in random patterns, such as clouds, toast or stains on a wall.

Our brains naturally try to recognise patterns, even when none actually exist.

Example:

"That burnt toast looks like a cat. That's pareidolia."

Misophonia

A condition where certain everyday sounds trigger an unusually strong emotional reaction, such as irritation, anxiety or anger.

Common triggers include chewing, loud breathing, pen clicking or repetitive tapping.

Example:

"People chewing loudly triggers my misophonia."

Skin Hunger

Also known as touch deprivation, skin hunger refers to the emotional longing for physical touch, such as hugs, hand-holding or other comforting contact.

Many people experience it after spending long periods alone or away from loved ones.

Example:

"After living alone for months, she realised she was experiencing skin hunger."
