What is clean skincare, and is it more than just hype?
Skincare is more than just beauty maintenance these days; it has also transformed into a green movement where consumers are more aware than ever of what they‘re putting on their skin and whether those ingredients can harm the sole planet we’re living in. Nasty words like parabens, hydroquinone, sulfates, oxybenzone, and the likes (yuck!) have become the villain in the skincare realm which eventually birthed the clean skincare trend or clean beauty in general.
Simply put, clean skincare is a concept where harmful chemicals and methods are completely absent in the production of a beauty product—which ranges from cruelty-free makeup and skincare brands to chemical-free makeup and skincare products.
Clean beauty isn't just a trend, however. The educational aspects of clean beauty have paved a way for vegan and cruelty-free makeup and skincare brands to thrive, as consumers no longer want to support the harmful production of beauty products that impose more harm to the planet and those that inhibit it.
Important keywords to remember:
Clean: beauty products that are usually free of sulfate, parabens and toxic chemicals.
Vegan: The products contain no ingredients that are animal-derived.
Cruelty-free: the products and their ingredients are, at no time, tested on animals, and the brand is not available in China, where animal testing is sometimes performed by law.
That being said, it can be quite a challenge for us Malaysians to acquire clean skincare on our shelves due to the limited options sold in local beauty stores and as for private online sellers, most of them don't offer most sough-after international brands and even if they do, the authenticity can't always be confirmed. Luckily, we've found a website called Favful.com that offers authentic beauty brands that are vegan, cruelty-free, and most importantly, clean all around (!).
Let's explore some of our options, shall we?
Founded by a renowned beauty specialist, skincare guru, and entrepreneur Susan Yara who owns the Mixed Makeup youtube channel, Naturium takes pride in releasing only the best and cleanest ingredients in its products, some of which have become a cult's favorite among its customers. She constantly educates on the types of ingredients that exist in the beauty market on her Instagram and TikTok so yes, this lady knows her stuff.
The brand Versed is a firm believer of the belief that skincare shouldn't be complicated; which is why you'll find that their ingredients are straightforward, free of those yucky chemicals, and more importantly it is vegan, cruelty-free, sustainable and clean. Yay!
We don't think this brand needs an introduction. It took the world by storm with its minimal packaging and effective ingredients that have worked wonderfully on so many different types of skin— almost every skincare enthusiast would recommend any of TO's products when asked of their holy grails.
Elf cosmetics is a bit of an underrated brand in Malaysia but only because they're not sold here, which is why Favful.com is a great place to shop if you're looking to buy their products. Yes, they're cruelty-free, yes they're vegan, and yes, they're clean!
Whoever came up with this brand deserves a special place in heaven. Good molecules' products are not only affordable, but their skincare actually works which completely berates the notion that the more expensive the skincare is, the more effective it'd be. To add icing to the cake, they're completely vegan and cruelty-free.
The elites among clean skincare, Then I Met You sits highly on top of its throne, not without reason. This Korean skincare is globally known for its top tier products that deliver equally top tier results.
