Malaysia has introduced a new requirement that limits social media account registrations to individuals aged 16 and above. The regulation came into effect on 1 June 2026 as part of efforts to create a safer online environment for children and teenagers.
Under the new rules, social media service providers are responsible for ensuring that users are at least 16 years old before they can register for an account or access age-appropriate services on their platforms. To verify their age, users may be required to provide official identification documents such as a MyKad or passport.
The age verification requirement applies to major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Existing users will also be required to undergo age verification, with service providers given a six-month period to complete the process.
For users found to be under the age of 16, platforms must provide a one-month grace period for them to download or transfer their personal data, including photos and videos. Once the grace period ends, restrictions, account suspensions, or other enforcement actions may be imposed.
Users who fail to verify that they are at least 16 years old may be prevented from creating new social media accounts. Existing accounts and access to related platform features may also be restricted.
The initiative aligns with the Child Protection Code (CPC) and Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) under the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA). It aims to ensure that social media access is appropriate for users' ages while strengthening protections for children in the digital space.
Authorities believe the measure will help create a safer online environment, encourage responsible use of social media, and promote shared responsibility among social media providers, parents, and guardians in protecting children online.
As digital platforms continue to play a major role in everyday life, the new age verification requirement represents an important step toward improving online safety and ensuring that young users are better protected from potential risks on social media.
