Love-Bombing... But Platonic

Most people have heard of love-bombing in romantic relationships, but did you know a similar pattern can happen in friendships too?

Friend-bombing describes a situation where someone showers a new friend with overwhelming attention, affection, praise or gifts before genuine trust has had time to develop. While it may seem flattering at first, it's worth paying attention to how the friendship evolves over time.

It May Feel Amazing At First

In the beginning, it can feel like you've finally met someone who truly "gets" you.

They might:

Message you constantly throughout the day.

Compliment almost everything you do.

Tell you they've never connected with someone like you before.

Quickly refer to you as their "best friend."

Having someone show interest and enthusiasm isn't automatically a bad thing. In fact, many genuine friendships begin with excitement. The key difference is whether the relationship develops naturally or starts feeling rushed.

Common Signs To Notice

Friend-bombing often involves a pattern of behaviours rather than a single action. Some signs include:

Expecting instant replies to every message.

Sharing deeply personal information very early in the friendship.

Giving excessive compliments or unexpected gifts.

Wanting to spend nearly all of their free time with you.

Pushing for a "best friend" label before you've truly gotten to know each other.

One behaviour alone doesn't necessarily make someone toxic. Instead, look for repeated patterns that make you feel uncomfortable or pressured.

Then The Friendship Starts Feeling Heavy

As time goes on, the constant attention may begin to feel less exciting and more exhausting.

They may become upset when you spend time with other friends, question why you didn't reply immediately or expect you to prioritise them above everyone else.

In some cases, you might even start feeling responsible for managing their emotions or guilty whenever you need space.

Healthy friendships shouldn't leave you feeling like you're constantly walking on eggshells.

The Biggest Test? Your Boundaries

One of the clearest ways to understand the health of a friendship is by setting a simple boundary.

For example, you could say:

"I enjoy talking to you, but I can't message throughout the day."

A healthy friend might feel a little disappointed, but they'll respect your need for personal space.

A more concerning response would be repeated guilt-tripping, anger, silent treatment or consistently ignoring the boundary you've clearly communicated.

Respect is one of the strongest foundations of any lasting friendship.

Is It Always Manipulation?

Not necessarily.

Some people become intensely attached because they're genuinely excited about a new friendship. Others may struggle with loneliness, insecurity or a fear of abandonment.

Their intentions may not be malicious.

However, good intentions don't erase the impact of behaviour. Even if someone doesn't mean to be controlling, it's still important to recognise when a friendship is becoming emotionally draining or unhealthy.

What You Can Do

If a new friendship feels like it's moving too fast, it's okay to slow things down.

You can:

Take your time before sharing deeply personal information.

Maintain your existing friendships and hobbies.

Set clear and respectful boundaries.

Observe whether their behaviour remains consistent over time.

Trust your instincts if something feels overwhelming.

Strong friendships aren't built overnight.

Real closeness develops through mutual trust, respect and shared experiences not through pressure, guilt or constant reassurance. A genuine friend won't need to rush the connection because healthy friendships are built to grow naturally.
