Car accidents can happen anytime even during a short drive to work or a quick trip to the store. In stressful moments like these, its easy to panic and forget what to do next.

If you ever get into an accident, staying calm and knowing the right steps can help protect your safety, your rights, and your insurance claim.

1. Safety First

Before anything else, check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call for medical assistance immediately.

Avoid moving injured people unless its absolutely necessary for safety reasons, such as a fire risk or dangerous traffic situation.

2. Turn On Your Hazard Lights

Switch on your hazard lights right away. This alerts other drivers and helps reduce the risk of another accident happening nearby.

If you have a warning triangle, place it behind your vehicle to make the area safer for approaching traffic.

3. Move to a Safe Spot (If Possible)

If the accident is minor and your vehicle is still drivable, move it to the roadside or a safer area.

This helps avoid traffic congestion and lowers the risk of causing another collision.

However, if the accident is serious or the car is unsafe to move, leave it where it is and wait for authorities.

4. Take Photos and Videos

Documentation is extremely important after an accident. Take clear photos and videos of everything at the scene, including:

Car damage

Number plates

Road conditions

Traffic lights and surroundings

Position of both vehicles

These records can become very useful for insurance claims and in case disputes happen later.

5. Exchange Details

Make sure to exchange important information with the other driver, such as:

Full name

Phone number

IC or driving licence details

Car plate number

Insurance information

Stay calm and polite during the conversation, even if emotions are running high.

6. Make a Police Report

In Malaysia, a police report is usually required for insurance claims.

You should:

Go to the police station within 24 hours

Bring your IC, driving licence, and accident photos

Make a report even if the accident seems minor (depending on the situation)

Provide dashcam footage if available

Making a report protects you in case new issues appear later.

7. Inform Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurer as soon as possible after the accident. Ask them about:

Panel workshops

Towing arrangements

Insurance claim procedures

Avoid using random towing services that suddenly appear at accident scenes, as some may overcharge or create complications.

8. Settling Without a Police Report

Some people choose to settle accidents privately, especially if the damage is very minor and both parties agree. While this is possible, you should still be careful.

If you decide to settle privately:

Take clear photos of all damages

Agree on repair costs or visit the workshop together

Get written confirmation of the agreement (even a WhatsApp message is better than nothing)

Ensure both parties clearly agree that it is a full and final settlement

Important Warning

Private settlements may seem easier, but there are risks involved because:

The other party may still make a police report later

Insurance claims can become more complicated

Hidden damage may only appear days later, which is actually very common

That's why proper documentation is always important, no matter how small the accident seems.

Accidents are stressful, but knowing what to do can make the situation much easier to handle. Stay calm, prioritise safety, and make sure everything is properly documented. A few careful steps now can save you from major headaches later.
