We don't know if you've been sat, but K-Pop Demon Hunters has just become the most popular Netflix animation in history!
Breaking Netflix records in its sixth week with 26.3 million views, what started as a low-key release with little promotion has turned into Netflix's 'Frozen'.
The film follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey three K-pop idols who fight demons using the power of music. Set in Seoul, the English-language animated movie combines K-pop glam, supernatural action, and Korean culture.
Netflix didn't expect it to blow up like this. It quietly dropped the film in June with almost no hype, competing with Pixar's Elio, and skipped the usual film festival buzz.
But word of mouth kicked in fast. Week 1 pulled just 9.2 million views. Week 2, 22.7 million. Week 6, record-breaking.
On top of that, the soundtracks lead single Golden is back at #1 on the Billboard Global 200 and even headed for an Oscar nomination.
So, Netflix is going all in:
- Two sequels and a short film are already in early talks
- A live-action remake, TV series, and even a stage musical are in the works
- Merch is flying off shelves, with a previously crew-only plush toy now a best-seller
- Samsung has teamed up for promotions more brand deals are on the way
The original directors, haven't officially signed on for the future yet, but Netflix and Sony Animation both hold rights and are eager to build out the universe.
