In a time when the cost of living continues to climb, one couple in Kuala Terengganu is making a quiet yet powerful impact by serving hearty meals at prices everyone can afford.
Sabarudin Ramli, 42, and his wife, Ajuma Arasikim Din, have been running Nasi Berlauk Juedin, a modest eatery located in Kampung Tok Jiring, with a mission that goes beyond making profit. Their goal? To feed the community without burning holes in their customers' wallets.
"We used to price our food like any other regular place," Sabarudin shared. "But after hearing how many of our customers were struggling, we decided to embrace the 'rahmah' concept and lower our prices."
According to FMT, today, customers can enjoy nasi campur with a wide variety of dishes starting from just RM5. The couple begins their day at 4 am, cooking up a storm with over 30 different dishes daily. Some of their crowd favourites include ikan patin masak tempoyak, ayam berempah, udang masak lemak cili api, ikan tiga rasa, and kerabu pegaga. And to top it off? Refreshing iced tea or syrup drinks for only 50 sen a glass.
Despite the slim margins, the couple is unfazed. "Even if we don't make much, at least we're helping people," Sabarudin said. "Especially large families who can't afford to dine out like they used to."
Their journey began with a humble stall in Kuala Nerus, offering meals for RM2.50. Six years ago, they moved into their current shop, which has since gone viral on TikTok for its generous portions and unbelievably low prices. "We now get around 300 customers a day," said the father of three. "Most days, we're sold out by 1.30 pm."
Sabarudin insists that affordability doesn't mean compromising on quality. "We serve seafood dishes like prawns in gravy for just RM4. People can't believe it."
Regular customer Muhammad Asyraf Haniff Zaki, 35, said he was pleasantly surprised when he paid just RM30 for a full meal that would usually cost him RM50 elsewhere. "I hope more eateries will follow their example," he added.
Nasi Berlauk Juedin operates from Sundays to Thursdays, 10 am to 5 pm or until food runs out. Given the growing demand, it's best to get there early.
