At 49, She Returned To The Ice After A 20-Year Hiatus: It's Never Too Late To Start"

Born in Canada, Sandra Gabriel first stepped onto the ice at just four years old and from that very moment, she was hooked. Figure skating quickly became more than just a hobby; it was her safe space, her passion, and a place she could truly call home.

As the years passed, Gabriel immersed herself in the sport, participating in competitions and performances that shaped her youth. The rink wasn't just a training ground it became a second home filled with memories, discipline, and dreams.

However, like many athletes in structured sports, reality began to set in as she grew older. In a world where youth often defines opportunity, Gabriel found herself facing an unspoken limit.

"Past 18 in figure skating clubs, you were almost shown the door," she shared in an interview.

Though she initially stepped away at 16, her love for skating never truly faded. It pulled her back for a few more years, allowing her to hold on to the passion she wasn't quite ready to let go of. But eventually, life took priority. By the time she entered university, Gabriel made the difficult decision to leave skating behind and focus on her studies and personal growth.

Years went by, but the ice never left her heart.

In May 2018, at 42 years old, Gabriel made a powerful return this time, joining an adult figure skating club on Montreal's South Shore. Her comeback wasn't about competition or proving anything to others. It was deeply personal.

Part of her wanted to revisit a lingering "what if," while another part of her longed to reconnect with her mother her biggest supporter throughout her skating journey.

Stepping back onto the ice after decades away was both thrilling and emotional.

"It was the weirdest feeling ever. Doing something so ordinary, yet it felt like coming home again," she said.

Of course, the journey wasn't without its challenges. Her body had changed, and relearning techniques required patience and resilience. But this time, Gabriel approached skating differently with humility, self-awareness, and a genuine love for the sport.

Now at 49, her relationship with skating has evolved. She no longer chases elite jumps or competitive titles. Instead, she focuses on strength, longevity, and listening to her body.

Most importantly, she skates for joy.

Through her inspiring journey, Sandra Gabriel reminds us that passion doesn't have an expiration date. Whether its returning to a childhood dream or simply doing something that makes your heart feel full, its never too late to start again.
