At Sekolah Kebangsaan Kandis in Bachok, Kelantan, teacher Rohani Rajab is taking a unique and impactful approach to educating her students about body safety. Using music as her medium, she has crafted a child-friendly song that teaches young children how to recognise inappropriate touching and encourages them to speak up when they feel unsafe.
With lyrics like:
"My body is mine,
Don't you try to touch it,
I don't like you making me uncomfortable,
Please don't do that,
Touching here and there,
You have ill intentions,
So I have to let others know."
.......the song conveys a strong message about boundaries and bodily autonomy in a way that's accessible and memorable for young minds.
Rohani's efforts are part of a broader initiative supported by Yayasan Hasanah, a foundation under Khazanah Nasional Berhad, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education. Together, they aim to equip teachers with the tools and knowledge to deliver Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) that's both age-appropriate and relevant.
Spearheading this initiative in Kelantan is the Reproductive Health Association of Kelantan (ReHak). Through close cooperation with local educators, ReHak has been working to improve how topics like consent, reproductive health, and respect are taught in schools.
In an interview with The Fourth, ReHak State Manager Tengku Nur Fazila Tengku Hassan shared insights into the programme's foundation:
"We started conversations with teachers from several districts because we wanted to understand how these subjects are currently delivered in schools."
She emphasised the vital role educators play:
"Most students spend the majority of their time in schools, so teachers are the adults they interact with the most. That's why we focused on empowering them."
The initiative culminated in a year-long teacher capacity-building programme across the Bachok district. The goal: to foster an environment where children are informed, protected, and empowered to make safer choices.
By turning such a sensitive topic into a singalong, teachers like Rohani are not only educating, they're also opening up space for important conversations to take root early in life.
