PTPTN's 'Missing Persons' Post on Facebook Criticized for Publicly Shaming Loan Defaulters

By providing loans, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has assisted a large number of students in pursuing higher education.

But some of these graduates "disappear" and don't pay back their loans for years.

PTPTN urged debtors to refund their loans with a "missing persons notice" that was placed on its Facebook page yesterday, March 1, 2024, 4PM.

To encourage people to repay their loans, PTPTN encouraged the public to tag their friends. Netizens can also tag themselves if they didn't pay their loans too.

When they spotted the post, netizens expressed their gratitude to PTPTN for supporting them during their academic journeys and kindly asked the organization not to humiliate borrowers in this manner.

A netizen who continues to pay his loans on a monthly basis by automatic debit pleaded with PTPTN to show compassion for recently graduated students who are just starting out in life and have low incomes.

Another user complained that despite his best efforts, he has constantly been met with postponements and is left with a huge debt to pay back.

He enquired as to if there was a simpler method for delaying payments using PTPTN. It was suggested that he get in touch with PTPTN to reorganize his payment schedule.

A tiny minority of internet users, however, demanded a harsher stance by adding the names of those who neglected to pay back their PTPTN loans to a blacklist.

They recommended that the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS) keep records of these borrowers.

In the event that borrowers default on their PTPTN loans, this could bar them from obtaining credit cards, purchasing vehicles, or purchasing real estate.

PTPTN responded to verify that the CCRIS information has the borrowers' names.
