Modern Phone Slang That You Probably Didn't Know Existed

Our phones have become such a huge part of daily life that they've inspired an entire dictionary of modern slang. While you've probably heard of terms like "ghosting" or "doomscrolling," there are plenty of lesser-known words that perfectly describe everyday phone habits.

Here are five modern phone-related terms you might not have known existed.

1. Textrovert

A textrovert is someone who is incredibly chatty through text messages but becomes surprisingly quiet in real life. They can send long paragraphs, funny memes, and endless voice notes, yet barely say a few words when you meet them face-to-face.

Example:

"He sends essays in the group chat but barely talks when we lepak. Such a textrovert."

Many people find texting less intimidating because it gives them time to think before replying, making them appear much more confident online than in person.

2. Textpectation

Textpectation is the anxious, excited, or impatient feeling you get while waiting for someone to reply to your message.

Whether it's a crush, a job interview, or an important conversation, those few minutes can feel like hours as you keep checking your phone for a notification.

Example:

"I sent my crush a text on WhatsApp and now I'm having serious textpectation."

If you've ever stared at your screen wondering why someone is "online" but hasn't replied, you've probably experienced textpectation.

3. Phubbing

Phubbing combines the words phone and snubbing. It refers to ignoring the people around you because you're too focused on your phone.

It often happens during meals, gatherings, or conversations, making others feel overlooked even though you're physically present.

Example:

"Can you stop phubbing during makan? We've been trying to talk to you the whole time."

While checking your phone occasionally is normal, constantly phubbing can negatively affect relationships and conversations.

4. Swipe Sleeping

Swipe sleeping describes the habit of endlessly scrolling through your phone while you're half asleep, often without fully realising what you're doing.

The next morning, you might discover you've accidentally liked old photos, opened random apps, or spent much longer online than you intended.

Example:

"I woke up and realised I accidentally liked posts from 2021. Must've been swipe sleeping."

Late-night scrolling can also make it harder to fall into deep, restful sleep.

5. Nomophobia

Despite sounding unusual, nomophobia is a real term. It describes the fear or anxiety people feel when they can't use their phone, whether because the battery dies, there's no signal, or they've forgotten it somewhere.

For many people, smartphones are used for navigation, banking, communication, and payments, so being without one can genuinely feel stressful.

Example:

"My battery dropped to 1% before I could order a Grab. Total nomophobia."

While a little concern is normal, constantly feeling anxious without your phone may be a sign that it's time to take occasional digital breaks.
