If you are not ready to be a parent, please be sure to take contraceptive measures, because in Malaysia, self-abortion or artificial abortion is illegal and you will be held legally responsible!

According to Oriental Daily, an unmarried woman in Malaysia was sentenced to nine months in prison after she pleaded guilty when she appeared in court on May 23, 2025 for allegedly taking abortion pills to intentionally prevent the birth of the fetus.

The incident happened at around 10pm on May 12, 2025, in an apartment unit in Melaka Tengah.

At the time of the incident, the 21-year-old female defendant, Norazzeti Azima Awang Long, was five months pregnant. After taking abortion pills purchased from a social platform, she handed the aborted fetus to a friend for burial.

Later, she went to Malacca Hospital for treatment because of swollen breasts and lied that she had suffered a miscarriage.

However, she later admitted that she had taken abortion pills before the miscarriage, violating Section 315 of the Penal Code (intentional prevention of birth), which carries a 10-year jail term, a fine, or both if convicted.

Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek, the lawyer representing the Legal Aid Foundation, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the defendant, pointing out that the defendant was the 10th among 13 siblings and was a cafe employee with a monthly salary of RM1,800.

"The defendant needs to support his 76-year-old father who suffers from heart disease, and three younger siblings who are still in school."

He also pointed out that the defendant took the abortion pills purchased through social media because she felt pressured by her boyfriend after repeated coercion.

The magistrate sentenced the accused to nine months' jail, starting from the date of his arrest on May 19. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif.
