I know, no one likes a kaki ampu or the boss’s pet, but you have to admit that the reason why you don’t like that is because they get all the good promotions, the raises, the bonuses and even the good projects. The whole reason why they get all these good stuff is because of all the ass kissing they do. 

Maybe its time you took a page out of their book. Have you been wanting a promotion or a raise? The long way to get what you want is just doing what you’re doing now and wait patiently while the shorter way is to include some of the ampu-ing techniques into your daily work life. 

Here are some of the ass-kissing techniques that you can try out:

1. Ask for more responsibilities

Instead of just relaxing at your desk after completing all your work for the day, go up to your boss and ask them if there is anything more that you can do. Don’t be the kind of employee who just sits around doing nothing until they are given a task. Be proactive! 

Have an attitude of a go-getter, it shows initiative while also taking extra work off your boss’s plate. When you make life easier for your boss, they will definitely appreciate it and remember it the next time they are looking to promote someone or give someone a raise. 

2. Bring only positive vibes to work

When we say be positive, we don’t mean go overboard because that can be quite sickening after a while. Positive vibes can include things like greeting your boss and co-workers with a smile every day. When a problem arises, be the positive voice who sees the silver lining and manages to solve the problem happily. 

If you have something negative to say, maybe keep it to yourself. Just like the saying goes, if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. 

3. Get to know your boss personally

Although the rule is to never mix business and personal, when it comes to your boss, I’d say have a little bit of both. Instead of just knowing the basics about your boss like how many kids they have or their favourite food, go for something deeper like asking about their family, or their plans for the weekend. 

Also, try and remember some of the personal anecdotes or personal details about your boss. Maybe they talked about how their daughter loves a certain sport, so you can bring that up when you’re talking to your boss the next time. People are often impressed when you remember small but meaningful things about them or their loved ones. 

4. Be punctual 

Although we Malaysians like to follow our Malaysian timing, its not really a good clock to follow when you’re trying to impress your boss. Even though everyone else is doing so, showing up late to work just shows that you’re not on top of your game. 

Being early or on time shows dependability which is a huge factor in the workplace. When you display it, you become the person your boss knows he can depend on when it comes to important meetings or events. 

5. Volunteer whenever you have spare time

You don’t have to volunteer every opportunity you get, that will leave you overwhelmed with too many responsibilities. Don’t overload yourself with work. If you have some extra time, then try and help out in certain projects that your boss does. 

Don’t just volunteer and then don’t perform, that will just make things worse. So, make sure you know you can perform the task and complete it on time before volunteering. You’ll show your boss your dedication and how you’re up for new challenges while also gaining valuable experiences.
