A Chinese blogger's recent visit to Semporna, Sabah, turned controversial as she continuously criticized the local cuisine and expressed frustration over language barriers, provoking backlash from Malaysian netizens.

The blogger uploaded a video on the social media platform Douyin, where she shared her disappointment upon arriving in Sabah, stating that it was nothing like she had imagined. She complained about the unappetizing local food and the difficulty in communicating due to the language barrier.

In the video, she lamented the inability to find any decent food upon arrival, almost starving on the streets on the first day. Eventually, she discovered a Chinese restaurant in Kota Kinabalu but remained dissatisfied with the dishes served.

"This looks plain and tasteless. This weird sauce is everywhere. I've lost my appetite just looking at it."

She mentioned that she initially wanted to find a seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu but struggled due to the language barrier, expressing frustration at not being able to communicate with the locals.

"Which blogger told me that there are Chinese people everywhere in Malaysia, and you can get by without speaking English? Since I arrived yesterday, I've only met three or four Chinese people; the rest can't speak Chinese at all."

She also complained about the poor conditions in Kota Kinabalu and the unmet expectation of being able to order KFC through a food delivery platform.

"With the hot weather and bad food, I hope tomorrow's itinerary will be better."

The video sparked criticism from Malaysian netizens, with many pointing out that the blogger should have done more research before her trip and that Malaysia is not a country where Mandarin alone ensures smooth communication.

Some netizens explained that many tourists visit Kota Kinabalu for scuba diving purposes.

Others suggested that if she finds Malaysian food unpalatable, she should simply stay in China.
