Sacrificing Dreams For Family: Mohd Tarmizi Abdullah's Unwavering Commitment To Caring For His OKU Brother

In a quiet village in Kampung Rasal Tok Uban, Mohd Tarmizi Abdullah, 41, has chosen a life of unwavering devotion and sacrifice to care for his brother, Mat Yusoff Abdullah, who has been bedridden since birth. Despite dreaming of becoming a chef, Tarmizi set aside his aspirations to take full responsibility for his beloved sibling, who falls under the multiple disabilities category.

Tarmizis dedication to his brother intensified after the loss of their parents. His father, Abdullah Ibrahim, passed away in 2008 after a stroke, and his mother, Saadiah Yamin, whom Tarmizi describes as his "paradise," passed away two years ago due to old age. While his other siblings remain supportive of Mat Yusoff's well-being, Tarmizi has taken on the primary role of caregiver as they share a home.

"My brother cannot walk or live independently. He can only crawl to move around and requires full assistance for daily tasks, including toileting and hygiene," Tarmizi shared during an interview with Harian Metro. "He also has a skin condition and is sensitive about his surroundings, so I have to pay close attention to his needs."

Tarmizi earns a living by crafting decorative gifts, a line of work that offers him the flexibility to be present for his brother. "I spend most of my time at home, so this arrangement allows me to ensure he's well cared for."

Caring for Mat Yusoff has been a two-decade journey for Tarmizi, one that has brought unique challenges and profound moments of connection. "He often sulks and acts out, so I've learned how to handle his emotions. If his clothes don't smell nice, he won't wear them, and his unclear speech requires me to be very patient to understand him," Tarmizi explained. "But I'm used to it, and I can't imagine life without him."

Even when Tarmizi must leave the house for errands, he ensures Mat Yusoff's safety by monitoring him through CCTV connected to his mobile phone. "I don't leave him alone for long because it feels different when he's not around," he added.

Among their shared joys is a love for dikir barat music, which often fills their home with warmth and cheer. Beyond daily care, Tarmizi finds solace in sharing his thoughts and feelings with Mat Yusoff, even if his brother's responses come in the form of smiles or tears.

To inspire others and promote awareness about caring for individuals with disabilities, Tarmizi shares snippets of their life together on TikTok. His videos highlight the importance of love and compassion in overcoming the challenges of caregiving.
