Looking for a date night spot that feels luxurious without completely breaking the bank? We recently stumbled upon MUGIN YORUYA in Bandar Sunway and it might just be one of the most affordable hidden gems for those looking to enjoy a premium Japanese dining experience.

Described as a "Fun Dining" concept, MUGIN YORUYA sits comfortably between refined culinary artistry and vibrant nightlife energy. The space itself is stunning, featuring dimly lit interiors that create an intimate atmosphere, while the sushi counter takes centre stage. Sitting there allowed us to not only enjoy our meal, but also watch the highly experienced chefs carefully prepare each dish right before our eyes.
To start our evening, we opted for the Mizuki Course (RM188), which includes five courses and a selection of Yakitori.

Our meal began with the Seasonal Appetiser, featuring grape seed blossom, firefly squid and tempura white fish. It was a beautifully presented introduction to the meal, showcasing a variety of textures and flavours. The firefly squid delivered a rich umami depth, while the tempura white fish provided a light crispness that balanced the dish nicely.

Before moving on to the main highlights, we were served Kani Croquettes alongside Spicy Edamame. The croquettes were crispy on the outside with a creamy, flavourful filling, while the edamame added just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting.

Next came the Yakitori selection, consisting of Leek, Momo (chicken thigh), Cherry Tomato, Tsukune (chicken meatball) and Okra skewers. Each skewer was grilled beautifully, with the Momo standing out for its juicy texture and smoky flavour.

Then came the moment we had been looking forward to most: five kinds of seasonal assorted sushi prepared right in front of us. Watching the chefs work was an experience in itself. Every slice, every brush of seasoning and every piece of sushi was assembled with incredible precision.
The uni sushi was particularly mind blowing. In fact, every piece we tried showcased remarkable freshness. One thing we appreciated was the balance between the seafood and rice. Unlike some sushi spots where the rice can feel overwhelming after a few rounds, MUGIN YORUYA maintained a ratio that allowed the natural flavours of the seafood to shine through without making us feel overly full too quickly.

Following that was the Tempura Moriawase, which turned out to be one of our favourite courses of the evening. Instead of serving it with the usual dipping sauces, it came with yuzu salt, wasabi salt and soy salt. Each seasoning brought something different to the table, elevating the tempura in a way we did not expect. It was a simple touch that made a surprisingly big difference. And we might return just for this!

The Wagyu Hamburg arrived next. While the presentation was visually impressive, this was unfortunately the only dish that did not quite hit the mark for us. The meat was a little undercooked, but it was alright as a whole.

Thankfully, the meal quickly got back on track with the chef's handroll sushi. This was both delicious and interactive, as we were able to assemble the handrolls ourselves. It added a fun, immersive element to the dining experience while still delivering on flavour.

To end the meal, we were served the dessert of the day. Ours consisted of translucent jelly cakes coated in a nutty peanut-like powder alongside a silky custard pudding. Light, refreshing and not overly sweet, it was a lovely way to conclude the evening.

Overall, MUGIN impressed us with its quality ingredients, immersive dining experience and elegant atmosphere. While there were a few minor shortcomings, particularly with the Wagyu Hamburg but the sushi, tempura and overall experience more than made up for it.
For an affordable yet elevated date night in Bandar Sunway, MUGIN is definitely a spot worth adding to your list:
