The world of sports has unfortunately suffered an irreparable loss when three international athletes from Ukraine met their demise while defending their country against the Russian military, which has witnessed thousands of casualties from both sides so far.

FIFPRO, the global union for professional soccer players, confirmed on Wednesday that two Ukrainian soccer players, Vitalii Sapylo, 21, and Dmytro Martynenko, 25 were killed during the war.

Former Ukrainian biathlete, Yevhen Maylshev, 19 was also among the many casualties, regrettably. The news was announced on Twitter by the International Biathlon Union, in an official statement. "The Executive Board once again condemns the Russian attacks on Ukraine and the support provided by Belarus," they added.

Latest on the Russian invasion of Ukraine: The Russian forces have reportedly opened fire at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and have also taken major cities in Ukraine under their siege. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has since implored international assistance.

May the souls of these brave athletes, and the rest that have lost their lives due to this war, rest in peace.
