Recently, a post went viral on TikTok (@aideabig) when a woman named Aida shared her thoughts and showed the condition of the prayer room (surau) at her workplace.
Aida works at Deloitte, an audit firm based in the United Kingdom (UK). She explained that there had been claims suggesting her employer did not permit staff to perform prayers during working hours. Addressing the issue, Aida clarified that her non-Muslim employer is, in fact, respectful and understanding of cultural and religious differences.
"Even my white boss respects our prayer times," she said.
Aida also pointed out that it is unreasonable for employers to restrict prayer on the grounds that it consumes too much time. In reality, she said, the act of praying only takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
In her post, Aida shared a glimpse of the prayer room provided at her office, which is referred to as a Multi-Faith Room.
Although the space is relatively small, it is adequately equipped with a mini ablution area, a sink, a trash bin, chairs, and several prayer mats. The room is also divided into two sections to accommodate both male and female staff.
"So if your boss doesn't allow you to pray, tell them it only takes 10 to 15 minutes, especially during lunch breaks, it won't ruin the company.
"Just respect different cultures. As long as you complete your work, prayer won't have any negative impact," Aida emphasized.
The post quickly drew attention in the comments section, with many users agreeing with Aida's perspective that prayer should not be seen as a disruption to work.
However, some individuals argued that certain employees tend to take an excessive amount of time to pray, which may explain why some employers impose restrictions.
