JPJ To Install AI Cameras To More Efficiently Detect Traffic Offenses, Says Anthony Loke

If you find yourself always fiddling with your phone while waiting at a traffic light, here's a warning! The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has begun installing artificial intelligence (AI) cameras that can record your actions at intersections. This innovative technology aims to capture evidence of traffic violations and improve road safety.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently issued a stern warning to drivers who engage in smartphone use while waiting for the green light. With the deployment of AI violation detection cameras, motorists can now be issued traffic summonses directly for such offenses.

The AI violation detection camera system, currently implemented as a pilot project, has been installed at selected traffic lights. Minister Loke emphasized that this system was in operation before he assumed his role, indicating that it is not a recent development. The purpose of this pilot project is to showcase the potential of AI technology in detecting and curbing undesirable driving behaviors.

The implementation of AI surveillance cameras at traffic lights is not limited to a single region. On July 4th, Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced the launch of an upgraded AI violations detection camera system in his state. This system aims to capture evidence of offenses, collect data for policy planning, and enhance enforcement measures. The initial results of the pilot project at the Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection have shown promising outcomes within just one week of its rollout.

Netizens have been sharing how these AI cameras work to detect offences on TikTok as well.

The primary objective of deploying AI surveillance cameras is to collect valuable data that can inform evidence-based decision-making. By analyzing the data gathered from these cameras, relevant agencies can gain insights into driver behavior patterns, identify accident-prone areas, and take appropriate enforcement actions. Sarawak Transport Minister Lee emphasized the significance of this data-driven approach in addressing the challenges posed by unruly drivers and accident hotspots.
