Based on recent research reports, it would appear that scientists have created robot cannibalism.
In short, they have invented a robot that is able to absorb or merge with others to evolve and become self-sufficient.
The mechanics is a rod-shaped module that can expand, contract, crawl, and connect magnetically with other modules. It is specifically designed to adapt and grow by merging with other modules.
The robot then absorbs other modules to repair, grow, and adapt, mimicking biological processes. This whole process is demonstrated by six modules merging into a single robot with a tail-like extension.
From an environmental POV, the robot will use its environment to transform from a 2D shape to a 3D tetrahedron, showing potential for self-reconfiguration based on surroundings.
After transformation, the robot uses any extra module as a "walking stick". This new form, called a "ratchet tetrahedron", moves 66% faster on a 10° incline.
This invention can help robots assist others in upgrading by pulling them up or helping them complete transformations. They may also be able to discard low-battery modules and replace them with fresh ones.
Cool, right?
