A second pet dog in Hong Kong is tested positive for the Covid-19 virus. The Hong Kong Government said that the dog was sent for a test after its owner was confirmed infected, and the result turned out to be positive. Both the owner and the pet are quarantined for the time being.
The German shepherd shows no signs of disease after infection. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will continue to monitor and conduct repeated tests on the dog.
Yes, peeps, pets can get infected as well!
The department reminds all pet owners to practice hygiene steps even around their pets, including, washing hands before and after handling their pets and pet's food and supplies. On top of that, avoid kissing them! This is to protect pets from being infected if the owner was infected.
The good news is that the department claims that there is no evidence that pet animals can transmit the virus to humans or that the virus can cause the disease in dogs.
This is the 2nd case with pet animals got infected. The first was a 17-year-old Pomeranian, who got the virus from its owner as well. It was tested as a weak positive (low-level infection). The pet was released from quarantine after it has recovered. However, it passed away 2 days later. The owner refused to conduct an autopsy, and therefore, the cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
