McDonald’s gift toys, especially those featuring characters from numerous cartoons like The Finding Nemo, Frozen and so on, have always been a popular item among children. Recently, the famous fast-food company is giving us a way bigger surprise by releasing 2 lavish gold cups - one to be auctioned on eBay and the other to give away - that are each valued at nearly US$100,000 (about RM 380,000).

The luxurious cup, called the ‘Golden Shamrock Shake’ is made with high-polish 18 karat gold and embellished with 50 emeralds, 50 white diamonds and set with 50 yellow diamonds in the shape of the Golden Arches to represent the successful 50 years of the iconic Shamrock Shake. 

Shamrock Shake is a mint-flavored milkshake sold in McDonald’s in the US. It was created in the year 1967 by Hal Rosen, a McDonald’s owner and operator in the State of Connecticut in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. If you had never heard of a Shamrock, it is actually a young three-leaved sprig, used as a symbol of Ireland. This explains why the drink is green in color.

The seasonal milkshake dessert was officially introduced to all McDonald’s stores throughout the nation in 1970 and was well-received by the public. It has been 3 years since Shamrock Shake was last sold in the country. But now, on its 50th anniversary, the green drink is available for purchase again along with the new Oreo Shamrock McFlurry across the US. Both items are also introduced in Canada as well as Ireland.

One of the sparkling cups will be auctioned off through Ronald McDonald House Charities’ eBay for Charity page. The auction started from 5 a.m. on 25 Feb Eastern Time Zone (EST) to 5 a.m. EST on 6 March.

The opening bid on the cup began at US$1, and it has reached US$30,000 (about RM 127,000) at the time of writing. The McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed that all the money raised will go to RHMC. The non-profit organization has been helping families with sick children since 1974.

The other golden cup will be given away to a customer who buys Shamrock Shake or Oreo Shamrock McFlurry using McDonald’s app between 25 Feb and 6 March. By just purchasing either of the items, the customer will be entered into a random prize drawing automatically. And if he or she is lucky enough, he or she will come out as the owner of one of the limited fancy cups. However, only American users are applicable to the lucky draw.
