A 36-year-old Japanese man dressed up in Batman's Joker costume who started attacking passengers on a Tokyo train line on Sunday evening for no apparent reason, injuring dozens of people, has been arrested.

The suspect began stabbing the passengers on the train, dousing petrol on the seats and setting fire before trying to flee. The train's driver slammed on the emergency brakes after a commotion was heard from the carriages. In a video posted by NHK World News, passengers can be seen fleeing away from the scene before an explosion erupted at the end of one of the carriages.

According to a BBC report, after the commotion the suspect ran to the nearest convenience store, casually confessing to the cashier, "I am suspect in the incident reported by news media", shortly before getting arrested.

He also allegedly told the police that it angered him when he saw women who "looked happy" and wanted to kill them. Among the victims was one elderly man who was found unconscious and a female student who was seriously injured, various reports say.

The Tokyo police department refused to release any other details.
