While the Olympic Games is a huge grand event, it doesn’t mean that there are no mistakes that make seriously funny memes or some weird moments that make you stare at your screen in confusion.
Here’s a compilation of those moments:
1. Roasted Doves
During the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, millions of people all around the world gathered with their family and friends to watch the opening ceremonies which is everyone’s favourite part about the Olympics.
So, in this particular Olympics, they decided to add in some doves as a symbol of peace, but the weird but funny moment happened when the doves were lit on fire by accident, I hope. After that, doves were no longer allowed in the Olympic Games.
2. Lip Syncing
In the 2008 Beijing gamed, people were blown away by how bright, grand, and impressive it was. What made it weird was when a young girl came up on stage to sing “Ode to the Motherland”.
People started to realise that the voice that was heard didn’t exactly match the face being seen. Later it was revealed that the young girl who sang the song was not allowed to appear on stage sadly because of her poor stage presence and appearance.
3. Apocalypse Awareness Marathon
During the 2004 Athens Games, Neil Horan also known as “The Grand Prix Priest” or “The Dancing Priest,” interrupted Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, Brazillian long-distance runner to raise awareness of the nearing apocalypse.
Neil Horan is a self-proclaimed Irish Roman Catholic priest who also interrupted the 2003 British Grand Prix for the same reason.
4. James Bond and The Queen Flying
Part of the London Olympic Games opening ceremony performances was a rather bizarre one with Queen Elizabeth flying to the games in her helicopter with Daniel Craig as British secret agent James Bond and then parachuting down from the helicopter!
It wasn’t really her though, it is an actor dressed as her. Either way, it was quite bizarre.
5. The 5th Ring That Didn’t Blossom
Yet another funny moment in an opening ceremony, this time in the 2014 Sochi Opening ceremonies. It wasn’t that bad, but it definitely made me laugh!
When attempting to display the 5 rings of the Olympic logo, they were set to look like a flower then blossom into the rings. However, due to some technical difficulties, the fifth ring did not blossom and turn in a ring. It just awkwardly dangled there, and the world just got to see 4 rings and one flower.
6. Lost Key
The 2016 Rio Olympics Games managed to dazzle audiences with an amazing ceremony making people think wow, nothing could possibly go wrong. Well, something did go wrong!
Two days before the games had officially began, the organizer lost the keys to one of the stadium gates! They had to use bolt cutter to break open the gate!
7. Michael Phelps Angry Face
In the 2016 Rio Olympics Games Michael Phelps went viral because of his super scary angry face! Before his 200-meter butterfly semi-final race, he wore a hood and headphone while staring into space with a super intense death stare.
